Blessed Is the Match: The Life and Death of Hannah Senesh vs. Crime After Crime

Blessed Is the Match: The Life and Death of Hannah Senesh
Dir: Roberta Grossman • Czech Republic, Hungary, Israel • 2008 • 86 mins • English

Employing dramatic reenactments, Blessed Is the Match commemorates the life of the Hungarian poet and resistance fighter who became a national heroine in Israel. Hannah Senesh knew little of Judaism until rising anti-Semitism prompted her migration from Budapest to Palestine at the outset of World War II. Enlisting in a mission to liberate Hungarian Jews, she parachuted behind enemy lines only to be captured by the Nazis. From her fiery embrace of Zionism to an untimely death, Hannah's journey is poignantly recorded in poems and letters, with narration by Oscar-nominee Joan Allen. Featured at the 2009 AJFF.

Crime After Crime
Dir: Yoav Potash • USA • 2010 • 87 mins • English

Rookie lawyers battle to free an incarcerated survivor of domestic violence in Crime After Crime, a riveting California case that made national headlines. Debbie Peagler was imprisoned in connection with the murder of a man who abused her and her daughters. The story takes an unexpected turn when a pair of attorneys with no background in criminal law volunteers to take her case, exposing judicial misconduct that could result in Peagler's release. Attorney Joshua Safran, an Orthodox Jew, draws inspiration from religious tradition, while his partner, Nadia Costa brings enduring stamina as an ultra-marathon runner. Crime After Crime raises a banner on behalf of battered women and Jewish values of social justice. Featured at the 2011 AJFF.
