Shiva Baby

About The Film

Please Note: The drive-in screening has been rescheduled to Thursday, February 25, from its earlier date due to inclement weather.

In this caustically comic rollercoaster of sex and neurosis, a disaffected young woman anxiously juggles an accumulation of mishaps and potentially disastrous encounters, each threatening to expose her messy multitude of secrets, all at the same funeral call.

East Coast twenty-something Danielle (a star-making turn by Rachel Sennott) is a perennial college student who’s been lying to her overbearing parents (Fred Melamed and Polly Draper) about finishing her degree in gender studies, and supplementing her allowance by testing out the transactional powers of her sexuality. Her heavily compartmentalized world collapses one afternoon at a shiva, where Danielle is mortified to encounter both her estranged ex-girlfriend Maya (Booksmart's Molly Gordon), and current sugar daddy Max (Danny Deferrari), with his too-perfect shiksa wife (Glee’s Dianna Agron) and crying baby in tow. As the day unfolds with building tension, a frazzled Danielle toils to keep up multiple versions of herself, schmooze the bagel-and-lox crowd, fend off family pressure, and confront her insecurities…all the while, stumbling her way to self-awareness.

Probing relationships in today's hook-up culture, writer-director Emma Seligman's sharp-witted, expertly orchestrated debut feature (expanded from a short film) is at once cringeworthy and laugh-out-loud funny, and a SXSW Grand Jury Award nominee and winner of the L.A. Outfest screenwriting prize.
