To Dust

About The Film

A grief-stricken Hasidic widower enlists an unwitting biology teacher in an obsessive struggle to make peace with his loss and grasp the mortality of the flesh, in the perversely charming, dark buddy comedy TO DUST. Mourning the death of his cancer-stricken wife, Shmuel (Géza Röhrig of Son of Saul) can't find solace in the meticulous burial rituals of his Upstate New York Orthodox community. Haunted by disturbing dreams, and consumed with the decomposition process, he seeks out an incredulous biology professor Albert (Matthew Broderick), to learn how the interred body will decay. The bumbling odd couple teams up in a clandestine, increasingly blasphemous search for catharsis, reaching absurd extremes. A wonderfully weird tightrope of pathos, grisly humor, and morbid curiosity that is not for the squeamish, first-time filmmaker Shawn Snyder's compassionate inquiry into the spiritual and scientific dimensions of death is Tribeca Film Festival Audience Award winner.
