Beyond the Mountains and Hills

About The Film

A fractured Israeli family is tested by a lurking personal and societal menace in BEYOND THE MOUNTAINS AND HILLS, a disquieting art house drama from the director of The Band’s Visit.

Returning home after many years of military service, David Greenbaum (Alon Pdut) is having difficulty transitioning to civilian life. Adrift, he takes a low-end job selling dietary supplements, while the rest of his family struggle with their own issues. His wife Rina (Shiree Nadav-Naor), a high school teacher, is seduced by a student; activist teenage daughter Ifat (Mili Eshet) forms an uneasy bond with Arab neighbors; and son Omri (Noam Imber) observes the simmering tensions from afar. As David’s household unravels, blind frustration leads to an impulsive act, triggering a cascade of events that corrupt the innocence of everyone.

Engaging and challenging audience sympathies at the same time, writer-director Eran Kolirin weaves the individual narratives into a profoundly moving portrait of a family at a crossroads, a microcosm for the malaise of Israeli society as a whole. Nominated for six Israeli Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and the Un Certain Regard Award at the Cannes Film Festival.
