About The Film

BANG! THE BERT BERNS STORY chronicles the colorful life and pioneering musicography of an audacious and influential maverick of crossover 1960s music–rock and roll, and soul–that helped define an era.

Recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Bert Berns is not a household name, yet was the songwriter and producer behind a litany of hit singles (“Twist and Shout,” “Piece of My Heart,” “Under the Boardwalk” and “Brown-Eyed Girl,” to name a few). He also helped launch the careers of such legends as Van Morrison and Neil Diamond. Afro-Cuban rhythms emerge as an important influence, as does the mob infiltration of the music business. Born in the Bronx to Russian-Jewish immigrants, his meteoric rise from obscurity, and the heightened emotional pitch of his music, were propelled by a chronic heart condition that cut his life tragically short.

Filmmaker Brett Berns brings his late father’s story to the screen with a rousing jukebox of enduring classics, vintage performance footage, narration by musician Steven Van Zandt, and interviews with the music royalty, industry colleagues, and family members who knew Bert best.
