Sophie's Choice
About The Film
Meryl Streep delivers perhaps her finest performance in SOPHIE’S CHOICE, a rich portrayal of an Auschwitz survivor who harbors an unthinkable secret. The story is narrated by an aspiring Southern writer, Stingo (Peter MacNichol), who befriends the haunted Polish émigré Sophie (Streep) and her volatile lover Nathan (Kevin Kline in his screen debut) at a boarding house in post-WWII Brooklyn. In a series of flashbacks, the dark truth behind the couple’s wartime ordeal comes to light, hopelessly drawing Stingo into a doomed love triangle. Alan Pakula’s epic is anchored by Streep’s Oscar-winning performance, noted for its studied accents and seminal final scene so harrowing that Streep refused to do more than one take. The Atlanta Jewish Film Festival is proud to present a special 30th Anniversary screening of this affecting adaptation of William Styron’s morally complex bestseller.
