My Lovely Sister

About The Film

Blending Sephardic superstition and magical realism touches, MY LOVELY SISTER is a poignant melodrama about sibling rivalry and reconciliation among a family of Jewish immigrants from Morocco. Set in an impoverished town in present-day Israel, Marco Carmel’s feature, based on a Moroccan Jewish folk tale, centers on a curious love triangle among the sour and superstitious Rahma (Evelin Hagoel), her long-suffering husband Robert (Moshe Ivgy) and the ghost of Rahma’s estranged beautiful sister, Marie (Reymonde Amsellem), who dies from the pain of banishment after marrying an Arab fisherman (Norman Issa). Wracked with guilt, the family’s conscience is tested as they try to make peace with the past and wrestle over Marie’s final resting place. MY LOVELY SISTER was nominated for 9 Israeli Academy Awards, including wins for Best Actress (Hagoel) and Best Supporting Actress (Amsellem).
