Joanna
About The Film
Urszula Grabowska delivers a haunting performance as a courageous Pole illegally sheltering a Jewish girl in this gripping WWII drama from director Feliks Falk, a master of Polish cinema. An educated piano teacher struggling to cope in Nazi-occupied Warsaw, Joanna (Grabowska) awaits her husband’s return from the front when she makes a split-second decision to rescue a seven-year-old left behind after a roundup of Jews. Within the safekeeping of her spacious apartment, childless Joanna forms a surrogate bond with little Róza (Sara Knothe) while facing constant danger from paranoid neighbors and family, the watchful eye of the Polish underground, and the romantic advances of a Nazi officer (Joachim Paul Assböck). Showered with honors at the Polish Film Awards, Polish Film Festival and Moscow International Film Festival, JOANNA won best film, screenplay, acting and director awards.
