Incessant Visions: Letters From an Architect
About The Film
Award-winning filmmaker Duki Dror artfully renders the enigmatic and tragic life of German Jewish expressionist architect Erich Mendelsohn, whose story unfolds through the reading of intimate letters exchanged with his wife Louise. Mendelsohn’s true voice emerges, however, as the nomadic couple voyages across three continents, leaving behind remarkable buildings that altered the history of architecture. Original drawings by the architect are deftly juxtaposed with contemporary views of such art deco masterstrokes as the Einstein Tower and Universum Cinema in Berlin, and De La Warr Pavilion on the South Coast of England. Like so many mid-twentieth century German Jewish émigrés, Mendelsohn’s career path was dramatically altered by the rise of Nazism, making especially meaningful his work on the Mt. Scopus Campus of Hadassah Hospital and the Weitzman House in Israel. INCESSANT VISIONS: LETTERS FROM AN ARCHITECT illuminates Mendelsohn’s dynamic vision of a modern world governed by elegant design.
