The Heart That Sings
About The Film
Director Robin Garbose (A Light for Greytowers, 2009 AJFF) offers this uplifting movie musical examining Jewish identity through the lens of a Catskills summer camp for girls in the 1950s. Twenty-something Miriam Bogen (Rivka Siegel) is a dispirited Holocaust orphan who starts anew in Brooklyn. After fleeing a miserable sweatshop, she goes to Camp Zimra to serve as the music and drama counselor. At first, the campers take advantage of her broken spirit, but they are eventually transformed by her music and stories from a lost world. THE HEART THAT SINGS is the latest theatrical release by Kol Neshama, a Los Angeles performing arts conservatory for religious girls. Featuring a beautiful score and cast of mostly Orthodox women, the film adheres to traditional Jewish values of modesty and is intended for female audiences only. Appropriate for ages eight and up.
