Free Men
About The Film
The little-known story of Muslim freedom fighters and a Paris mosque that sheltered Jews during WWII is woven into a pulsepounding wartime espionage drama inspired by actual events. Tahar Rahim (A Prophet) is a young Algerian immigrant who survives Nazi-occupied France by hawking black market goods. Arrested by police, the apolitical Younes agrees to spy on the Paris Grand Mosque and its shrewd imam (Michael Lonsdale) who is suspected of providing Jews false identification papers while feigning cordialities with a Gestapo major (Christopher Bucholz). A dangerous cat-and-mouse game ensues, as Younes befriends a charismatic cabaret singer (Mahmoud Shalaby) with a secret identity, prompting a change of heart and divided loyalties. In a time of religious tension and valiant resistance across the Middle East, FREE MEN is a powerful reminder of the universal struggle for liberation.
